Mackereth Opticians can trace its roots back to the 1930’s, when William Wadsworth set up the original optical practice at 6 Regent Street. George Gutsall bought the practice in 1949 and was joined by Alan Mackereth in 1961, who on George’s retirement, went on to run the practice, up to his own retirement in 1997. From 1997-2011 the practice became part of the Whitakers Optician Group that owned three practices in Calderdale, itself an old established family business dating back to 1932. In October 2011 Jeremy Topliss formed Mackereth Opticians Limited, thus returning Mackereths to its independency again, On Jeremy,s retirement in 2021 Helena Culhane purchased the practice with the aim of continuing to providing the very highest standards of professional eyecare to its patients
Optometrist, PhD FAOI McOptom
Dr Culhane graduated as an optometrist from DIT Dublin (1994) and was awarded both the Harte Barry and Johnson and Johnson Vision Prize awards. She obtained a PhD from the Department of Optometry, Bradford (2000). Helena has practiced in various optometry settings in West Yorkshire since 1995 and in 2021 took over from Mr Jeremy Topliss as the sole owner of Mackereths Opticians Ltd ensuring it continues as a truly independent local practice.

With two large frame display rooms, we can offer a huge selection of frames to choose from. Our computerised in-house workshop enables us to provide a speedy, quality service when making up spectacles and doing repairs. We carry a large stock of single vision lenses which enables us to minimize waiting times for making up new spectacles.
Ample on-street parking is available surrounding the practice, with wheelchair access available at the rear of the building.
