Your eyes are incredible, and they deserve proper care. At Mackereth Opticians in Halifax, our comprehensive eye examinations go further than just checking if you need glasses. We take the time to really understand your vision needs and eye health.
You wouldn’t run a car for years without an MOT, and your eyes need regular check-ups too. It’s not just about reading letters on a chart – though that’s part of it! A comprehensive eye examination can detect early signs of serious eye conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration, often before you even notice symptoms. What’s more, your eyes can reveal signs of wider health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Regular check-ups mean we can catch these problems early when they’re easier to treat.
Most optometrists recommend having your eyes tested every 2 years, though children, those over 70, and anyone with existing eye conditions should have annual examinations.
Our standard eye test takes around 30 minutes. We’ll make sure you’re comfortable and chat through your medical history, lifestyle, and any vision concerns.
During the test, we’ll check your visual acuity (how clearly you see at different distances), assess how well your eyes work together, measure your eye pressure, and examine the health of your eyes both inside and out. We test your peripheral vision, check for colour blindness, and carefully examine your retina and optic nerve.
What sets us apart here in Halifax is the continuity of care you’ll receive. Our patients love seeing the same optometrists at each visit. People often comment on how much time and care we dedicate to each test. We’re never rushed, and we’re here to answer all your questions.
Want even more detailed insights into your eye health? You can choose to add an OCT (optical coherence tomography) scan to your standard eye test. Using our state-of-the-art Topcon Maestro2, this gives us a detailed 3D image of the layers at the back of your eye.
We also use a Henson 9000 for visual field testing, which is particularly important for detecting glaucoma and for assessing driving standards with the Esterman visual test.
We believe everyone deserves excellent eye care, which is why we accept various medical insurance and vision plans. Many of our patients are eligible for NHS-funded eye tests, which means comprehensive examinations at no cost to them. If you’re unsure whether you qualify for a free NHS eye test, just give us a ring.
In England, you’re entitled to a free NHS eye test if you’re under 16, under 19 and in full-time education, aged 60 or over, or if you have certain medical conditions like diabetes or glaucoma. You may also qualify if you’re on certain benefits, have a family history of glaucoma, or are registered as partially sighted or blind.
