Myopia Control

If your child needs glasses for distance vision, you’re not alone. Myopia – short-sightedness – is increasing across the UK, affecting children at younger ages than ever before.

Understanding myopia

What is myopia? It’s when you can see things up close clearly but struggle to see distant objects. It happens when the eye grows too long, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.

The numbers are concerning. Nearly 1 in 5 UK teenagers are now myopic (NICER Study, Ulster University). Globally, half the world’s population could be myopic by 2050 (WHO). Research from Moorfields Eye Hospital found the proportion of myopic children increased by around 1% per year between 2009 and 2017, with this trend accelerating post-COVID.

Why does myopia develop?

Genetics plays a significant role: if either parent is short-sighted, their child is much more likely to develop myopia. But genetics alone can’t explain the dramatic rise we’re seeing. Children today spend much more time on near-vision tasks – screens, homework, reading – and far less time outdoors than previous generations.

Why myopia control matters

High myopia significantly increases the risk of serious eye conditions in adulthood, including glaucoma, retinal detachment, macular degeneration, and cataracts. The younger a child becomes myopic, the more time their prescription has to progress, and the higher their final prescription is likely to be. That’s why early intervention is crucial.

Advanced solutions to slow myopia progression

Modern technology offers clinically proven methods to slow down – and sometimes even halt – the rate at which a child’s short-sightedness worsens.

At Mackereth Opticians, we’re proud to offer the latest myopia control options. As an independent practice, we can source from many leading manufacturers to find the perfect solution for your child.

We’re accredited providers of HOYA MiYOSMART spectacle lenses, which use innovative technology to slow myopia progression while providing clear vision through regular-looking glasses. These are brilliant for younger children or those who aren’t ready for contact lenses.

For children suited to contact lenses, we primarily use MiSight 1-day lenses from CooperVision. These specially designed daily disposable lenses have been clinically proven to slow myopia progression by an average of 59% over 3 years, and they’re comfortable enough that children as young as 8 often manage them successfully.

Is myopia control right for your child?

We assess each child individually. There’s no fixed age limit – some children are ready for contact lenses younger than others. For contact lens options, we offer a convenient monthly direct debit scheme that spreads the cost and ensures your child always has fresh lenses.

The outdoor factor

Research consistently shows that spending at least 2 hours per day outdoors can help slow myopia progression in children. Natural daylight and focusing on distant objects both appear to play protective roles. It’s a simple, free intervention.
